Chia Seeds: Is grinding them necessary? If so, what type of grinder would I need?

I take a tablespoon (whole) 3x a day, with lots of water. Still, I'm having absorption issues. Has anyone had this problem, or can you recommend a solution besides letting the seeds gel first? I don't think I could eat the gel. It's a texture thing. Thanks for your help.
